Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)

This is called acute myelogneous leukemia, because in the years before treatment, patients with this disease died as if they were hit by a train.

Presenting symptoms are related to bone marrow failure as a consequence marrow replacement by the malignant population.

  • Anemia
  • Infections, especially pneumonia, due to neutropenia.
  • Bleeding secondary to thrombocytopenia.
Demographics:
  • 80% of cases are in adults (peak incidence 15-39 years).
  • 20% of childhood leukemias.
  • No sex predicliction
