Bone marrow in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The Pre-B cell lymphoblastic leukemia always has substantial bone marrow involvement.

  • Believe it or not, this picture is of a bone marrow from an ALL patient.
  • In this frame there is nothing but lymphoblasts.
  • It's easy to see how the principal symptoms are due to the secondary cytopenias (anemia, infections and bleeding).
  • This is also why some children will complain of leg or knee pain, which is actually bone pain because of the marrow space expansion.
