infections are among the most common illnesses encountered.

common in temperate areas as the tropics.

lower respiratory infections are much increased.

pneumonia ranks third as cause of death, behind malaria and measles.

- The incidence of pneumonia in North American
children under 5 yrs of age is estimated between 10 - 50 / 1000 per year.
- In developing countries, the incidence is
estimated at 100 - 400 / 1000 per year.
- Highest rates in the first and second years of
life.
- Contributing include: low birth weight,
malnutrition, incomplete immunizations, air pollution, inadequate access to
health care, just to mention a few.
