Lobar Pneumonia
- Classic pneumococcal lobar
pneumonia remains common in Kenya and throughout Africa.
- The situation is much like that of the
pre-antibiotic era in the United States.
- Typical patient
- Previously healthy young adult.
- The usual signs
- Tachpnea,
- Fever,
- Rusty sputum
- Not so common signs
- Tender and enlarged liver (60%)
- Jaundice (20%)
- Myalgia
- Diarrhea
- Penicillin is still the first line drug,
although resistant strains are known.
- Other organisms associated with lobar
pneumonia:
- S. aureus
- Klebsiella species
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
