Bronchiectasis
  • Common in developing countries.
  • A consequence of infections generally.
    • Measles
    • Pertussis
    • Bacterial pneumonia
    • Secondary to airway compression from enlarged lymph nodes.
    • Unlike in the US, cystic fibrosis is a minor cause (longevity issues).
  • Typical physical complaints and physical findings.
    • Chronic cough productive of purulent sputum.
    • Repeat episodes of pneumonia.
    • Evidence of chronic pulmonary disease.
      • Generalized wasting.
      • Clubbing
  • Plain films of the chest may not be helpful in diagnosis.
    • Bronchogram is definitive.
  • Therapy
    • Physiotherapy with drainage
    • Antibiotics.
