Prevention:  Economic development, improved nutrition and better access to health care will go a long way to improving outcomes of pulmonary infections. These social advances are being made in Kenya, but there remains a long way to go.

Immunizations
  • Viruses
    • Measles
    • RSV (coming)
    • Parainfluenza (coming)
  • Bacteria
    • H. influenzae type b (Hib)
    • Pneumococcal (85% reduction in incidence in some studies)

Specialized Nutrition

  • For measles, some authors suggest vitamin A (200,000 IU p.o. X2 doses) for all children under 1 year of age where vitamin A deficiency is common.
    • This is thought to reduce the incidence post measles pneumonia.
  • Zinc supplementation, in regions where zinc deficiency is known, has been shown to reduce morbidity from pneumonia.

Our first patient. A woman with dyspnea.
