Atypical pneumonias. The term here is used in a broader context than we are used to
in Indiana. The basic atypical pneumonia seen in Kenya can be characterized
as:
- A syndrome that is distinct from acute
lobar pneumonia.
- Typically an older child or young adult
with gradual onset of symptoms.
- Constitutional symptoms, such as fever and
malaise are more marked than pulmonary complaints.
- Cough is often minimal with little sputum
production.
- Causative agents include:
- Bacteria
- Mycobacteria
- Protozoa
- Helmenths
- Viruses,
- especially measles-associated pneumonia.
- Eosinophilic pneumonia syndromes.
- Special HIV related infections
