Atypical pneumonias. The term here is used in a broader context than we are used to in Indiana. The basic atypical pneumonia seen in Kenya can be characterized as:

  • A syndrome that is distinct from acute lobar pneumonia.
  • Typically an older child or young adult with gradual onset of symptoms.
  • Constitutional symptoms, such as fever and malaise are more marked than pulmonary complaints.
  • Cough is often minimal with little sputum production.
  • Causative agents include:
    • Bacteria
    • Mycobacteria
    • Protozoa
    • Helmenths
    • Viruses,
      • especially measles-associated pneumonia.
    • Eosinophilic pneumonia syndromes.
    • Special HIV related infections
